BRIEF OUTLINE: A game in which students mark squares on a bingo card according to the target vocabulary spoken.

MATERIALS NEEDED:

DETAILED EXPLANATION:

  1. Have each student fill in the bingo card with the target vocabulary being taught (numbers, letters, colors, time, etc). Students can even draw a picture of the word for the more complicated vocabulary.
  2. The ALT/HRT calls out a random selection from the vocabulary and the students mark an X or place a 1-yen coin over the picture.
  3. When a student has all but one square in a straight line (diagonal, horizontal or vertical), they yell, "Reach!" When the final square is marked, they say, "Bingo!"
  4. The game can be continued until a certain number of people have achieved bingos or until all of the vocabulary has been called a few times, then see who has the most bingos.

VARIATIONS:

  • Change the winning bingo pattern to include various shapes. For example, the 'Poststamp' is the upper right four corner squares, and the 'Four Corners' are the squares in each of the four corners.
  • Sandy's Occupations variation: The attachment includes a 9-square, 16-square board and various pictures of jobs.
    • You have two options: 1.) You can copy and paste the pictures of the various jobs into the bingo card of your choice and create an array of different boards,
or 2.) print out a blank card for each student, print out a copy of the job pictures for each students, and let the students cut out and place the jobs of their choice on the board.
  • Anonymous' Interview variation:
    • First, review the vocabulary with the students. Since this is ES it will most likely be on topics such as fruits, feelings, sports, vegetables, etc.
    • After making sure all the students know the vocabulary, teach them the question/answer pattern: "What [fruit/vegetable/sport] do you like?" and "I like [apples, carrots, soccer]." Review several times to make sure the students understand it, then pick out some random students and ask them one-by-one.
    • Next, have students make a bingo board that is 5x5 (not included). Fill in one or more (or none) random spaces as "free" squares to make the next part shorter as needed.
    • Now have the students all stand up, and ask different people the questions, and fill in the empty bingo squares based on the answers they receive. You can make them write it in English, romaji, draw a picture, etc. to take up more time.
    • After they are done, either ask random students the target question one-by-one or simply shout out random vocabulary. The students will only mark one square with that vocab in it at a time. The first person to receive a bingo wins.

  • (submitted by Sandy Dennis) Sandy's Occupation attachment includes a 9-square, 16-square board and various pictures of jobs. You have two options: 1.) you can copy and paste the pictures of the various jobs into the bingo card of your choice and create an arrary of different boards, or 2.) print out a blank card for each student, print out a copy of the job pictures for each students, and let the students cutout and place the jobs of their choice into the board.
