BRIEF OUTLINE: Students play karuta and practice colours and shapes, and maybe countries if you so desire.

MATERIALS NEEDED:

  • Flashcards of countries with their flags: Not included, but mesenglish.com has some really nice flashcards for this particular need.
  • Flashcards of colours and shapes (not included)
  • A set of karuta cards per group.

DETAILED EXPLANATION:

  1. After reviewing colours and shapes with the students, show the various flags you will play karuta with. Ask students to name the country.
  2. Practice the English names.
  3. Divide students into groups of about 3-5 students, and give each group a set of karuta cards. Students lay out the cards in front of them.
  4. The ALT/JTE describes in English one of the flags, and the first student in each group to pick up that card wins. For example, "White with a red circle." (Japan)
  5. Rinse and repeat.
  6. The student with the most cards is the winner.

TEACHING SUGGESTIONS:

  • Some students may try to cheat, so tell them they have to put their hands on their heads first.
  • If you have 'crazy slapping' students, limit the number of slaps.
  • If you want to practice the names of countries, after each round, have the students repeat.
  • For a "foreign studies" lesson the ALT/JTE may want to talk about the meanings of different flags. (In Japanese is probably best!)
