BRIEF OUTLINE: Students take a character card and roll a dice and say a sentence based on the outcome, e.g. "This is Godzilla, he is my dad."

MATERIALS NEEDED:

DETAILED EXPLANATION:

  1. Have the students get into small groups (lunch groups are fine) and decide the order in which they will answer.
  2. The first student comes to the front and takes a card and rolls the dice.
  3. They show the card to the rest of the class who asks, "Who's that?"
  4. The student at the front answers the question based on the outcome of the dice, e.g. if they take the card with Rola on and roll a 3, they say "This is Rola, she is my grandma."

VARIATIONS:

  • You can add a scoring system to make it more competitive. I used the monkeys and bananas dice, (a dice with 1 monkey, 3 monkeys, 6 monkeys, 1 banana, 3 bananas, 6 bananas on the sides). Bananas represent points and monkeys eat bananas. The student rolls the dice after saying the sentence to determine how many points their team will get.
  • I know "mother", "father", "grandmother" etc are taught in textbooks more commonly over here, but these are terms that are almost never used in the UK anymore. I therefore chose to teach the words that are used the most in the UK. Obviously you can change the vocabulary on the worksheet if you wish.
  • This activity can also be played within small groups as opposed to teams against each other to increase the amount of practice each student gets, I just didn't trust my students to behave.
  •

 Comments:

  • My students really enjoyed trying to guess which character/celebrity would appear next and what relation they would be to their classmate.
  • Practicing family vocabulary with this game prevents any embarrassment/awkwardness for students whose families are not "normal".
