BRIEF OUTLINE: Children play a simplified version of "I Spy" while reviewing colours.

 

MATERIALS NEEDED (not included):

  • Flashcards.

 

DETAILED EXPLANATION:

  1. Explain that "I Spy..." is another way to say "I See..."
  2. Model with the HRT. HRT says "I spy something green." ALT searches the classroom saying "This one?" or "Here?" and points at the green object.
  3. Practice the phrase "I spy..." and "This one?" or "Here?" with the students, and then start the game with ALT or HRT being the first oni ('It').
  4. The first student to correctly guess the answer is the new oni.

 

VARIATIONS:

  • For higher level students, change the "This?" part to "Is this____?"
  • This activity could also be used with the Eigo Note 1 Lesson 7. The old oni asks the student who guesses correctly, "What's this?" and the student must correctly answer before becoming the new oni.

 

TEACHING SUGGESTIONS:

  • Try to guess outrageous things (like the tiniest bit of green on someone's shirt).
  • Try to include the HRT into the game by having them be the first oni.
