BRIEF OUTLINE: Students draw cards and say the number written.  They then say the sum of the cards drawn.

 

MATERIALS NEEDED:

  • Deck of cards for every two groups
    • Divide the deck into black and red piles
    • Remove Jokers, Kings, Queens, and Jacks. 

 

DETAILED EXPLANATION:

  1. Divide the students into groups of three or four.
  2. Hand out a 1/2 deck (black or red) to each group.
  3. Player 1 flips the first card over and says its value. ("one"; "ten")
  4. Player 1 flips over the next card and says the sum of the two cards. ("seventeen"; "twenty")
  5. If the cards are the same value, he or she keeps them.  If they are of different values, they are turned face down in a
        separate pile. 
  6. Repeat with player 2.
  7. The player with the most cards at the end of the game is the winner. 

 

VARIATIONS:

  • To practice numbers 1-100, have students multiply the card values. 

 

TEACHING SUGGESTIONS:

  • Make sure students are saying the numbers.  If a student cannot say the number, the others must help. 
  • Special needs classes may work best without addition or subtraction.  Saying the value of the card is enough. (1-10)
