Weather Interview

BRIEF OUTLINE: Students janken and converse to get their friends signatures on their hand-drawn bingo sheets!



  • BlankBingoCards attachment
  • Small emotion and weather cards (same attachment)
  • Large cards drawn by you to help with explanation



  1. Have students draw in each square a face displaying one of the 3 emotions (Happy, Sad, or Hungry) surrounded by one of the 5 types of weather (Sunny, Cloudy, Snowy, Rainy or Windy). For instance, they might draw a sad person getting blown about by the wind or a happy face under an umbrella. This may be difficult for some children to understand at first, so show them some large bingo squares that you drew to aid understanding.
  2. When students are nearly finished drawing, hand out the small cards. Play act as if they're super-secret so they'll be less likely to just show them to each other later.
  3. When all of the students are finished drawing, have them begin the game. First, they'll need to find a partner. The two of them will janken to find out who will ask the questions (the winner) and who will answer the questions (the loser). The loser answers the questions based on the pictures on his or her small card.
  4. The students converse as follows:
    Winner: Hello! How are you?
    Loser: Hello! I'm (emotion on card)
    Winner: How's the weather?
    Loser: It's (weather on card)
  5. The winner checks his or her card. If there is a square with a match for BOTH the emotion AND the weather (for example, it would be a match if the loser's card had "happy" and "sunny" and the winner's card had a square with both a happy face and a sun drawn in it), then the winner receives the loser's signature on that square. If there's no match, nothing happens.
  6. The children trade cards and continue to the next partner.
  7. Two lines full is BINGO! Give out a prize if you wish.


  • If you change the types of weather or emotion, make sure you only use a few of each type. Be sure that there's not more than 15 or 16 total possible combinations, otherwise it will be very difficult for the students to get a bingo.
  • The time quoted is for double bingos, it won't take as much time if you do a single bingo.
  • Be strict about time limits during the drawing stage, or they'll take up the whole class with it. I started by setting a limit of 4 minutes and then let them have 2 more minutes after that.
  • Be diligent about making sure the kids are using English in their conversations and not just showing each other the cards. I made the ones that wanted to claim bingo play with me one last time before I gave them a prize to make sure they could do it.



  • This is actually an activity for weather rather than for emotions, so I stuck to feelings the kids already knew. You could theoretically edit this to be just about anything though, just as long as you have enough combinations for the kids to fill in their bingo squares. 
  • In order to keep file size down, I left most of the cards blank. Just follow the instructions and copy and paste to fill them in. The attached file has both the blank bingo card and the small cards.
