BRIEF OUTLINE

Students test their listening and memory skills by listening to a conversation between HRT/ALT. Once it is finished, they try to dress up their doll to match the conversation.

MATERIALS NEEDED

  • Poster size print (B & W) of the image on page 32. If for some reason you can't make a poster size print, a hand drawn representation will suffice.
  • Several copies of the image on page 67. These copies should be the same size as the print on page 32. Each copy should have a different colour/design on it.
  • Small whiteboard/marker: Each group should have their own. You can pick them up at the 100 yen store or simply use paper.

DETAILED EXPLANATION

  1. After splitting the class into groups, have each group sit in a circle.
  2. The HRT/ALT do the conversation on page 75 of the Teacher's Manual: (conversation has been slightly edited)
    • H: I like red, so I have a red T-shirt. Do you like red?
    • A: No, I don't.  I don't like red. I like blue, so I have a blue T-shirt.
    • H: You like blue? I like blue too, so I have blue shorts.  Do you like yellow?
    • A: No, I don't. I don't like yellow. I like orange, so I have orange shorts.
    • H: You like orange? I like orange too, so I have an orange cap.
    • A: Nice!  I have orange socks and white shoes. Do you like white?
    • H: No, I don't. I don't like white. I have red socks and black shoes. Do you like black?
    • A: Not, I don't. I don't like black.
  3. As the conversation progresses, the teachers place the appropriate clothes on their boy/girl.
  4. Then, the HRT/ALT do a similar conversation but without putting the clothes on boy/girl.  The class must listen, take notes if they want, and when the conversation is over it becomes "Quiz Time!"
  5. Each group goes to the front and in turn places one of a piece of clothing onto the boy/girl.
  6. If they are correct, their group receives one point.
  7. Rinse and repeat.

VARIATION

  • Make some freaky, but understandable to the students, clothes (i.e. red T-shirt with a banana on it).

TEACHING SUGGESTION

  • Keep it slow at first since the conversation is pretty long and the students are not used to listening to something in a foreign language.
  • With each new skit, start the "bidding" with a different group.  Keep in mind that it's easiest to go first.
  • As a final challenge, use the conversation on the CD, it's fast and stupid, and not silly stupid.
  • If you can find appropriate pictures of different countries clothes, add those into the mix.
  • As you are reading the conversation, you can ask random students if they like whatever you are talking about.
  • Keep a note what you are saying in the conversation so you don't forget when it comes quiz time.

TIPS/CAUTION

  • Make one original conversation on the computer.  Then, use the Ctrl+F (find/replace) function to quickly edit the conversation for the second/third rounds.
