Brief Outline: A variation on the 'Mission Game' from Eigo Note. The students have to stick letters on the board to make a word before the Mission Impossible music reaches it's climax.

 

Materials Needed:

  • Mission Impossible theme song (not included)
  • Alphabet cards (not included): You will need at least one card for each letter of the alphabet. Attaching magnets on the back of each card works great.

 

Detailed Explanation:

  1. Put one ABC card on the desk of each student. For a class of more than 26, you'll need to have two of some letters.
  2. Ask for a volunteer and get them to come to the front. The ALT spells a word out to the class (for example P L A Y, "play"). Start the mission impossible music, and the student has to complete the mission before the music is over.
  3. The volunteer student has to find the letters of the word which the ALT said from the desks of the other students (the other students can help out by calling out their letters). Then the student undertaking the mission must stick the letters on the board in the correct order.
  4. Once they've built the word on the board, the student has to write the meaning of it (in Japanese) under the English spelling.
  5. If they can complete their mission before the music is over, they pass.

 

Teaching Suggestions:

  • This works best if the class co-operates to help the student doing the mission. I told one class that the other class completed 5 out of 6 missions and that they should try to beat it.
