BRIEF OUTLINE

"Nani Kore?" literally means "What is this?" in Japanese.  Students try to collect as many chips as possible by asking various "What is this?" questions.

MATERIALS NEEDED:

  • Plastic chips/checkers - you can use anything really, but if all else fails, you should be able to find small plastic poker chips at your local 100 yen shop.
  • School Object flashcards - not included, but MES-English has a couple of sets to choose from.

DETAILED EXPLANATION:

  1. After the students have learned the new vocabulary, give each of them three plastic chips.
  2. The students janken to start and the winner asks "What is this?", while making the shape of the object or doing the an action that the object makes (for example, you could do the action of writing if the object was a 'pen') with their hands. The loser student must answer the question: "It's a(n)..."  After answering, the loser gives the winner a chip.
  3. Then, they split up and go to someone else and repeat the process.
  4. The object is to collect as many chips as possible
    6. At the end of the game, count the chips and see who is the winner.

TEACHING SUGGESTIONS:

  • I normally have a few extra chips for those who run out.

TIPS/CAUTIONS:

  • You can use virtually anything for the 'chips', but I like plastic chips because they are impossible to destroy.
