BRIEF OUTLINEStudents try to make pairs with a standard deck of cards by answering the question "What do you want?"

MATERIALS NEEDED:

  • Standard deck(s) of playing cards. 1 or 2 decks should be fine, depending on class size.

DETAILED EXPLANATION:

  1. Teach "What do you want?" and "______, please" as well as the words Ace, Jack, Queen, King, and Joker.
  2. Deal the entire deck(s) to the students. Have the students put any pairs they have on their desk. Each pair is one point, and two pairs of the same card (e.g. two pairs of kings) is an extra point. So having two pairs of kings totals 3 points.
  3. Students move around the room, finding a friend and playing Janken.
  4. The loser asks, "What do you want?"
  5. The winner says, "I want ______, please."
  6. If the loser has the requested card, they give it to the other student. If they don't have the requested card, the Janken winner picks one of their cards at random.
  7. If they have made a pair, they put it on their desk.
  8. Continue playing for a few minutes, or until about half of the kids run out of cards.
  9. Have the students sit down and count the amount of pairs they have. The student with the most pairs wins!
  10. If a student has a joker, even if they have the most points, they lose no matter what.

VARIATIONS:

  • You can use any flash cards you want to practice any vocab, as long as the kids know "What do you want?" and "_____, please."

TEACHING SUGGESTIONS:

  • Make sure to walk around the room and make sure the kids aren't using Japanese.
  • Make sure they say "please" after requesting a card.
