BRIEF OUTLINE: Students practise saying aloud the English words for occupations while playing snakes and ladders.

MATERIALS NEEDED:

  • A die for each group, game pieces for each student (if you have enough to go around)
  • Game board
  • Word list

DETAILED EXPLANATION:

  1. Get students to form lunch groups and decide who is going first in the game.
  2. Students are to put their game pieces on the space labelled "Start". They take turns rolling their dice and moving their pieces.
  3. If students' game pieces land on an Occupation Box, they need to say aloud the English word for that corresponding occupation. If they don't remember the word, they may refer to the katakana transcription as a guide.
  4. Students move up the ladders when their pieces land on boxes in which the bottom of ladders can be found. Similarly, they slide down the snakes when their pieces land on boxes in which the tips of snakes can be found.
  5. The first student to reach the "Finish" box wins!

 TEACHING SUGGESTIONS:

  • Highlight to the students that while the katakana transcriptions are useful, they shouldn't use them as a crutch (i.e. they should remember the pronounciations of these words so as to facilitate communication with English speakers).
