BRIEF OUTLINE: I use this game for Kindergarten (幼稚園) and ES 1st grade (小1年). It works well as a fun warm up. You could possibly use the game in higher up classes, but it really doesn't have much value in that situation. Its just fun.

  • Students
  • Smiles

  1. Have your students sit in a big circle and get them quiet.
  2. Show the students a big smile. Point to your smile and say, "Smile!".
  3. Raise your hand up next to your face while smiling.
  4. Slowly 'wipe' the smile off your face with your hand.
  5. Without smiling, point to your 'smile' hand and say, "Smile!".
  6. Pass the smile onto another teacher or student (hand to hand) and have them put on the smile. (The teacher should know beforehand what they are supposed to do. Don't embarrass them, please.)
  7. Continue passing the smile around the circle.
  8. If the students without the 'smile' smile, make "burr burr" or error sounds to encourage competition.
  9. End the game when the 'smile' comes back to you or whenever you feel.

  • It is necessary to keep the kids quiet during the game. It really helps the intensity of the attempts to not smile.

  • Don't let kids slap the 'smile' onto other kids.
