BRIEF OUTLINE: A simple yet addictive and competitive word finder game.

MATERIALS NEEDED:

  • WordFinder worksheet: One worksheet per pair of students (completely editable).

DETAILED EXPLANATION:

  1. After splitting the class into pairs, hand out a worksheet to each pair.
  2. Here are the rules:
    • Each player searches for words that can be constructed from the letters of sequentially adjacent cubes, where "adjacent" cubes are those horizontally, vertically or diagonally neighboring. Words must be at least three letters long, may include singular and plural (or other derived forms) separately, but may not use the same letter more than once per word.
    • Each player records all the words (secretly) s/he finds by writing them in the space provided. After three minutes have elapsed, all players must stop writing and the game enters the scoring phase.
    • As to the scoring phase, one point is awarded to each word their partner did not write down.  Also, 4-letter words are two points, 5-letter are three points, etc.

VARIATIONS:

  • For lower-level classes, allow an extra minute on the timer.

TEACHING SUGGESTIONS:

  • This game is adapted from the popular Boggle word game, except without the board and no random letter combinations. I have positioned the letters in the hope that the lower level students can find words easily.
