FUN FACT: "Japan's 7-11s are open 24 hours a day, but most ATMs inside them close at 8pm."


DEFINITION: There are two types of verbs studied in this area: simple present tense and the 'Do' Helping Verb. The Simple Present Tense Verb is exactly what it says, 'simple'. Basically, it's a verb that only contains the core of the verb and - no ~ing, ~ed, ~s, etc. For example, "I like music."

The 'do' verb operates within Simple Present Tense sentences as a Helping Verb to:

  • Express the negative: I do not study at night.
  • Ask questions: Do you go to this school?
  • Short answers: Do you go to this school? No, I do not.





Breakfast Bingo: Students interview each other and ask each other "What do you have for...?" until their bingo sheets are filled in.


Breakfast Bingo Balls: This is a bingo activity where the students themselves choose which words to read out and in pairs ask each other the questions.


Breakfast Bingo Janken: Students janken to ask each other "What do you have for...?" and finish their bingo sheet.(Stephanie's version - Students receive a breakfast card, and interview each other to get a bingo.)


Breakfast Cootie-Catcher: Student make a Cootie-Catcher in order to practice engaging each other in simple conversation.


Character Guess: Students try to guess what character their partner is by using `Do you..?` questions.


Company Game: Students work together to interview one another (including the alt) and fill out the worksheet.


Country Names (various verbs): Students listen to hints and decide the correct country.


Do Personality Quiz ('do'): Students interview a partner to determine their personality.


Do You Like ゴキブリ? ('do' & various verbs, w/ a 'does' option): 'Gokiburi' means cockroach. Students play Janken to evolve from a cockroach to a human being. This cockroach game is a review for the 'do' helping verb and also practices the 'does' helping verb.

"Do You Like..." Bingo: A ice-breaking bingo game for 1st year JHS students that practices the 'do' helping verb.


Do You Survey? ('do' & various verbs): Using grammar the students have learned recently, they survey each other then play a fun guessing game.


Hugs & Kisses (various verbs): Students practice constructing sentences using two simple present tense verbs while playing a huge game of Tic-Tac-Toe.


Listening Challenge (various verbs): Students listen to the teacher read Present Tense verb sentences and circle the correct picture.


Kantan Interview ('do' & various simple verbs): かんたん (Kantan) means easy. Students interview two boys, girls and teachers to complete their questionaire worksheet.


Know Your Friend: Students show off their artistic skill and practice speaking.

Monsters on Mt. Fuji: Students work together to find out which monsters are going to blow up Mt. Fuji and try to capture them before anything bad happens.
Pictionary Race: Students draw pictures while their teammates try to guess what they are drawing.
Sequence (various verbs): Just like the Sequence board game, teams battle to line up four cards in a row to win. Lot's of fun strategies employed as players try to block the other team and remove a rival's card with the とりさる card.
Star Interview Skit ('do' & various simple verbs): The students write a skit. The premise is that one student is the 'interviewer' and the other student is the 'star'.

What Am I?: Similar to Twenty Questions, students ask questions to figure out their classmate's secret object.
What Am I? Game:Student's guess what the teacher is, then make their own hints and have their partners guess who they are.
What Am I? Quiz (wrksht only by Katie Young): A simple worksheet used as a warm-up for second graders. The first part is an easy crossword puzzle with a section at the bottom for students to write their own riddles.  
What Do You Do: Students prepare questions then do a speaking activity. It is quite heavy on the writing.

What Do You Eat?: This is an exciting dice/ board game for practicing "What do you~?" questions.
What Do You Have?: Students walk around making pairs in a battle to figure out each other's secret identities, while practicing the target grammar. (Specifically made with New Crown 1, L3 in mind.
What Do You Play?: This is a janken tournament game similar to Shinka.  Students race to see who can win first using, "What do you~?" grammar.
'What Do You' Interview: Students get into pairs, interview each other answering eight questions reviewing a few simple grammar points, the most complex and key grammar being "What do you...?" Then, they write their own answers in sentence form.
What Janken: Students rotate partners, play janken, interview each other and embrace their artistic skills.
