BRIEF OUTLINE: This is the fifth and sixth phonics lesson in the BubbleBoy Phonics 2009 curriculum. I use the "Big Test" as a conglomeration review and then proceed to teach the Magic E rule.

 

MATERIALS NEEDED:

 

DETAILED EXPLANATION:

  1. The Big Test of the worksheet is simply a review of what the students have learned up to that point.

    • PART 1: You say a sound and the students circle the appropriate letter.
    • PART 2: Up to this point the students have student Start Sounds, Finish Sounds, No Sounds and Guru-Guru Sounds. In part 2 and with exception of the vowels and the letter Q, students have to classify each letter into the appropriate group(s). For example, the letter B is a Start Sound and Guru-Guru Sound, so the student must put a circle (maru) in those groups' square. To give the students a hint, next to each letter letter is a number. The number represents how many groups that letter gets slotted into. (NOTE: If I were to do part of the test all over again, I would have maybe chosen a handful of letters instead of all of them. The students seemed to be seeing stars by the end of it.)

  2. Once PART 1 & 2 sections have been corrected, the students move onto learning the Magic E rule. I think this is the first lesson where the students finally get to see the real value of phonics and how they can start applying it in their English studies. There are three basic rules to the Magic E rule, which are explained on the worksheet in Japanese:

    • Magic E words have a the following pattern: Consonant + Vowel + Consonant + Vowel (C + V + C + V, or 子+母+子+母). And, the second vowel must be the letter E.
    • Once this pattern has been established, the E-sound goes silent, meaning, it does NOT get pronounced.
    • Finally, the first vowel in the word says its alphabet name: TAKE, HERE, BIKE, NOTE, CUTE, etc.

  3. In PART 1 of the Magic E worksheet, students must rely on the Magic E words they have already learned to find the 26 Magic E words in the word search puzzle. I created this worksheet for grade 3 students. (NOTE: For grades 1 & 2, you may want to add hints into the worksheet to the words they need to find.) The Magic E words located in the word search are:

    • Bike, came, care, face, five, game, gate, gave, hate, here, home, lake, take, time, late, life, like, made, make, mine, more, name, nice, rice, ride, sale, nine.

  4. In PART 2 of the Magic E area, students listen to you say a Magic E word and their goal is to write the missing letter. (NOTE: I tell the students that their is no associate to the word they hear and an actual meaning. It is simply a listening practice exercise
  5. In PART 3 of the Magic E area, students try and write as many Magic E words they can think of. However, they must think of words that have not already been listed in the previous areas. Also, tell the students that sometimes Magic E words are found within words: BASEball, FIREworks, HOMEwork, CAREful, etc. Like I mentioned before, this worksheet was designed for a grade 3 class. For grades 1 & 2, you may think about allowing them to use their textbooks.

 

TEACHING SUGGESTIONS:

  • In all the phonics curriculum I've read, after students learn individual letter sounds, they move straight to studying Short Vowel words (has, get, his, hot, bus). However, logistically speaking and in my opinion, it is smoother to move from studying individual sounds to the Magic E rule because the students needn't learn any new sounds, rather apply the individual letter sounds they have already learned to the rules of the Magic E.

    In the Magic E area, you might think about reversing Part 1 and Part 2. Part 1 seems to be a tad bit easier that it could be used to build the students' confidence level before moving onto the harder word search. 
  • Once the Magic E rule is taught, in the regular English classes, point out to the students when a Magic E word is introduced anytime in English class.
