BRIEF OUTLINE: ABNQMK stands for Almost But Not Quite Mario Kart. Students battle to be the quickest to finish this

year end review race. ES and JHS grade levels are now available.

MATERIALS NEEDED:

  • ABNQMK versions:Power Point / Low Tech
  • Mario powerups found in the Low Tech vers. (banana, star, red shell) cut up and put in a box.
  • ABNQMKQuestion Sheet attachments (optional):
  •  ES 01
  •  ES 02
  • JHSGrade01 (Columbus 21 based)
  • JHSGrade02 (Sunshine based)
  •

DETAILED EXPLANATION:

  1. Before class run the presentation for yourself and click the "rules" section to get a run down on all the buttons.
  2. In class start by assigning characters. It can be played with up to 8 groups.
  3. Once characters are selected hand out the question sheets to the groups. Each group should have 2 double-sided A3 or B4 question sheets. There should be a total of 26 questions, more than enough to finish the race.
  4.  Students work as a team to complete each question. When a question is finished students will take turns from each group to check their answer with the teacher. If it is correct the teacher will sign the star on the sheet, then move that team one space on the power point race board.
  5. Every 5 spaces there is a question block where students can pick up an item. They reach into a box and pull out an item to be used now or at a later time against another team. (See the presentation for more details)
  6. First one across the finish line will be declared the winner and get a sweet victory screen shot.
  7.

VARIATIONS:

  • Some of the JHS optional question sheets have a few textbook specific questions. Please review these question sheets and adapt them to your needs.
  • Items can be altered based on a teachers' preference.
  • If you don't have access to a computer you can use the low tech version. Blow up the race track using the school's poster maker then cut out and stick magnets on the characters.
  •

TIPS/CAUTIONS:

  • Get quick at checking answers and don't forget to move a team's character after they've answered. If checking answers and operating the presentation becomes overwhelming, train up the JTE to man the PC while you check the answers.
  • Depending on your computer speed it can get a little choppy sometimes.
