BRIEF OUTLINE: This pre-lesson activity actually includes three alphabet activities: fill-in-the-blank worksheet, alphabet bingo and a writing practice.

MATERIALS NEEDED:

DETAILED EXPLANATION:

  1. Alphabet bingo
    • Have students fill in the bingo sheet with letters from the alphabet; any letter is okay.
    • The ALT calls out various letters (A, C... or to make it more difficult say a word (apple, dog...)
    • Reward students who get bingos.
  2. Fill-in-the-blank worksheet
    • Hand out the worksheet and have students fill in the circle with the correct missing letter of the alphabet.
  3. Writing practice
    • After handing out worksheet, students practice writing the sentence.
With help from the JTE, ask the students to think about and answer the bonus question. The sentence is 'special' because it uses all the letters of the alphabet.

TIPS/CAUTIONS:

  • The bonus question on "The quick brown..." writing practice may seem too difficult, but if you or the JTE can give some hints in Japanese, the students can probably guess the answer. I've had some students come up with some very interesting alternate explanations.
