BRIEF OUTLINE: Students are divided into two teams and ask each other if they are free on a day to do something.

MATERIALS NEEDED:

DETAILED EXPLANATION:

  1.  Brainstorm at least seven after-school activities on the chalkboard.
  2. Then, split the class into pairs and hand out an A and B worksheet to each pair.
  3. The pairs janken and the winner starts by asking, "Do you want to go _____ on March the 1st?" If the box is coloured in on the pair partner's calendar, they respond, "Sorry, I can't. I'm busy. How about _____?"
  4. Continue until they find an open slot. Then, have them reverse roles and repeat the process.

VARIATIONS

  • To add to the game, when a date is picked, encourage the students to have follow up questions such as:
    • What time should we...?
    • What movie do you want to watch...?
    • Where should we....?"
  • It is also possible for higher levels to give an excuse as to why they are busy: "Sorry I can't. I have to wash my cat."
  • Cultural Value: Each day has a corresponding luck to it. Some days are 'Very Lucky', some 'Lucky Mornings', some 'Not so Lucky'. Ask your Japanese co-worker about them.

TEACHING SUGGESTIONS:

  • For larger classes, break the students up into smaller groups of 4-6 students.
  • For a writing aspect, have the students write about their appointments.
