Did You Play Bingo?

BRIEF OUTLINE: Students play bingo by interviewing their classmates, using "Did you...?" and then create sentences based on the signatures they received (practicing changing verbs to past tense).





  1. Students make pairs and ask their classmates questions from the bingo grid. If their partner responds, "Yes, I did," then they can receive a signature for that square. If their partner responds, "No, I didn't," then the student cannot receive a signature from that partner.

  2. After both students in the pair have asked a question, students then move on to find new partners.

  3. Once a student gets bingo by receiving signatures in five boxes vertically, horizontally, or diagonally, they can practice writing sentences at the bottom of the page based on the signatures they received. (Ex. "Itsuki played soccer yesterday.")


         1) If you want to extend the time of the activity, or let the students practice asking more questions, you can require them to get signatures for two-line bingo (nine questions, at minimum, versus five).

         2) If the class is fairly small, or you want to make it easier to complete, you can allow the students to ask again if they initially receive a "no" response (keep asking the same partner different questions until that partner responds "yes" and they receive a signature).

         3) You can let students receive signatures for each question they ask (not just for the ones where their partner           responds "yes, I do"), but have them indicate their partner's response, and then the writing portion can include sentences like "Masaki didn't study English yesterday." This variation means that the students only have to ask five questions, so you might consider requiring them to get two or more lines.

         4) For filling even more time/more practice asking questions, you can have the students receive signatures for every question they ask (similar to the previous variation), but they must fill out the whole grid, and can only get bingo if they have five "yes" or five "no" answers in a row.



  •  Make sure students know the meaning of each question and how to pronounce all the words before beginning.

  •  In addition to the regular construction of past tense verbs (adding -ed/-d or changing y to i before adding -ed), introduce/review irregular verbs (included in the box at the bottom of the worksheet) before the students move on to the writing portion.

  • You can require the students to ask the ALT or JTE at least one question (or offer stickers/extra points to the ones who do).
