BRIEF OUTLINE:Brief Outline: This is a standard board game style game where students land on a square ask another student a question beginning with "How long...?"

MATERIALS NEEDED:

  • HowLongBoardGame attachment: Includes a board with and without questions. As for the board 'with' questions, there are some blanks within certain questions that will need to be filled in.
  • Game pieces: I tell kids to use their erasers.
  • Dice: Optional but not included or necessary.

DETAILED EXPLANATION:

  1. After putting students in groups of 3-6, give each group a handout and 1-2 dice (2 makes the game go a lot faster).
  2. Designate what they will use as a game piece (koma in Japanese). We usually tell them to use their erasers.
  3. Explain the rules (grabbing a kid to do an example run with seems to work well):
    • Choose who goes first. Usually students will janken to decide.
    • Roll the dice.
    • Read the question to the student on your left.
    • Student to the left answers, then rolls the dice for the next turn.
    • The first person in each group to reach the finish first is the winner.

VARIATIONS:

  • With some classes, we leave some boxes blank and have them write in their own questions.

TEACHING SUGGESTIONS:

  • I found enlarging the game boards to A3 size works well.
