BRIEF
OUTLINE: Students practice reading and translating past progressive sentences using cute power point slides.

MATERIALS NEEDED:

DETAILED EXPLANATION:

  1.  In the first section, read the English together as a class, then get a student  to  translate the sentence.
  2. Try to wait until after the sentence is tranlated before removing the box covering the picture.
  3. In the second section students work in reverse. First they look at the picture then translate back from Japanese.
  4.

VARIATIONS:

  • You can play this as a type of game show where points are awarded to teams with the best / quickest translations.

TEACHING SUGGESTIONS:

  • This is a great review for the grammar point and should be used before you play a follow up game.  The JTE should already have taught the grammar point - so the students must be familiar with it before you start this activity.
  • Later slides also include sentences  using "when" as a conjunction. Feel free to alter them if you want to focus on the past progressive.
