BRIEF OUTLINE:  A fast-paced game where teams race to be the first to do the instructions correctly.

MATERIALS NEEDED:

DETAILED EXPLANATION:

  1. Students will be in teams (by columns). They clear their desks and push all their desks to the back of the room except for the first desk in each column. Teams line up or scrunch up beside the desks in the back of the room.
  2. Before you play, review the prepositions (under, behind, in front, in, on, next to). Then put a slip of paper face down with the same instruction on the first desk of each column.
  3. When you say, "Go!" the first student of each team will run up to the desk at the front (while their teammates are all scrunched up in the back), flip over the slip of paper and read the instructions.
  4. Since chances are that the front desk won't have the necessary supplies, the student must run back to their team and get the necessary things to complete the task. The first student who puts the proper number of things in the correct location gets a point for their team.
  5. After each round, the student at the front goes to the back.

TEACHING SUGGESTIONS:

  • I usually allow the student to discuss the instructions with their team mates, so when it's a weaker student's turn, they can still do the instructions from the help of their teammates.

TIPS/CAUTIONS:

  • This game can get a little hairball at times, especially with the slippers one. They need to get the slippers to the front desk, so many of the students believe that the best way to accomplish this is by taking off their slippers and throwing them at the desk like there's no tomorrow.
