BRIEF OUTLINE: Students learn how to turn a singular noun into its plural form. 

 

MATERIALS NEEDED:

  • MagicSBox attachment
  • An actual box
  • Pictures of cats, dogs and boxes
  • A pen and book

 

DETAILED EXPLANATION:

 

  1. PART 1:
  • Show the pen to the students and ask, “What`s this?” and wait for a response. When you receive the response, ask them to spell it and write the word on the chalkboard.
  • After the students clear their desks of everything, distribute the worksheet and have them fold the worksheet in half so only the top part of the worksheet is showing.
  • Have the students try and spell the pictures they see on the worksheet, and have them use a pen so they don't sneakily erase wrong answers. For lower level classes, allow them to use their textbooks.
  • After about five minutes, check the answers together.
  • Then, have the students put their pens down and look up at you.

 

  1. PART 2:
  • Put the big box on the table.
  • Have JTE ask you, “What do you have in the box?” Look in the box, make a cat sound, just to get more of students attention and smiles on their faces, and bring out one picture of a cat and ask them, “What`s this?”
  • After eliciting responds like, “It`s a cat.” or “Cat” or even “Kyatto”, and then ask them, “How many cats do I have?”. The goal is to get the students to answer, “One cat”.
  • Then, bring out a picture the second cat and ask, “How many cats do I have now?” After getting responds like “two” or “ni” say in a big loud voice and stress that an S gets attached to the end of 'cat': “Two cats." or perferrably, "I have two cats.” For lower level classes, I recommend the JTE to write the word on the chalkboard and explain the grammar point. However, the point here is listening comprehension, so I would not write it on the blackboard until you`ve done with all three, cat, dog and the box, OR if you see the class struggling to comprehend. NOTE: Make sure the students understand that words like 'box' receive an 'es'.
  • Finally, have the students complete the bottom section of the worksheet.

 

TEACHING SUGGESTIONS:

  • This lesson plan is designed as an introduction lesson for “How many XXX do you have?” However, this handout can also be used as a short warmup review.
  • This activity works best as individual work. However, it can be also done in pairs.

 

TIPS/CAUTIONS:

  • If you are not good at drawing, simply copy the cat, dog and the box from the worksheet. However, I have found personal drawings to help ease the students and get them to participate.
  • You can buy a box at the 100 yen shop but you should be able to find boxes in the recycling area at your school.
