BRIEF OUTLINE: Students read out 'must' sentences and one of their peers must do whatever they say.

MATERIALS NEEDED:

  • A list of 'must' sentences - cut up the sentences and put a handful of them into an envelope, making sure every group receives an envelope.
  • Microphones - one for every group. You can purchase these at a 100 yen shop.

DETAILED EXPLANATION:

  1. After splitting the class into groups, hand out an envelope and and microphone to each group.
  2. The group plays Janken to see who is the first student to start. That student takes the microphone, draws a sentence from the envelope, and reads it out into the microphone. The student to the left must do whatever is read.
  3. Continue until all the sentences are gone.

VARIATIONS:

  • Instead of going around in a circle, allow the person holding the microphone to choose which student they want to do the 'must' action. NOTE: First, make sure they call out the student BEFORE they choose the sentence out of the envelope, and second, make sure all the students participate. This avoids one student being selected over and over again.
  • For a longer game, make sure every sentence is different in all of the envelopes. Then, as a group finishes their envelope, they pass it to the next group.

TEACHING SUGGESTIONS:

  • For lower classes, you might include pictures with the sentences to help with the more difficult words.
