BRIEF
OUTLINE:Worksheet to supplement the Writing Plus 3 Picture Postcard section in New Horizon 1.

MATERIALS NEEDED:

DETAILED EXPLANATION:

  1. Go over the example in the textbook and the sample postcard on the worksheet. Teach new vocabulary and have students try reading them out loud too.
  2. Explain the parts of writing letters/postcards (date, greeting, body, end greeting, signature). Talk about different examples of greetings that can be used.
  3. Talk about differences in addressing postcards in America (you can use your own home country's style) and Japan. Sometimes the students find these cultural differences interesting.
  4. Onto the worksheet, have students write a fake address to send their postcard to.
  5. Write postcard content. Encourage students to get creative!
  6. When students finish writing the postcard, they can draw a picture on the 'front' of the post card and stamp.
  7. Present any interesting postcards to the class!

VARIATIONS:

  • Can change the content of the sample postcard with your own version. Just put your own name in the part.

TEACHING SUGGESTIONS:

  • If your worried students won't write and will draw pictures instead, use the blank space that's meant for the picture as a practice space for students to draft out their postcard body instead.
