BRIEF OUTLINE: This activity is a question/answer review that reviews the following question words: when, where, who, whose, what, how and which.

MATERIALS NEEDED:

DETAILED EXPLANATION:

  1. The JTE selects student volunteers to provide the Japanese translation for each of the 'W' words (when, where, who, whose, what and which) and 'how'. Students are encouraged to write the Japanese translation above each word on their worksheet.
  2. The ALT then prounounces each word in the worksheet toolbox twice with students repeating back each word twice. The JTE provides the Japanese translation for each word and students are again encouraged to write the Japanese translation about each word in the toolbox.
  3. The ALT then reads each of the 10 questions and students repeat back each of the questions.
  4. The students then begin answering the questions on the worksheet by plugging in a word or phrase from the toolbox. All but one question has at least two possible answers.
  5. After the students have completed their worksheets the ALT then selects 10 differenct student volunteers to an answser a question. Students must read the complete answered sentences, not merely the word for phrase used to complete the answer.

TEACHING SUGGESTIONS:

  • In order to encourage students to volunteer to answer the questions, the ALT or JTE will give each volunteer student a sticker after he/she has answered the question.

TIPS/CAUTIONS:

  • Limit the time to complete the worksheet to a maximum of 10 minutes (2 minutes per question).
  • I designed this activity for New Horizon (book 2, unit 10, part 3, page 87) but every JHS textbook can also utilise this idea.
