BRIEF OUTLINE: A group activity where groups unscramble gerund and relative pronoun sentences.

MATERIALS NEEDED:

DETAILED EXPLANATION:

  1. Number envelopes 1-10. Cut up sentence #1 and place in envelope #1, continue to #10.
  2. Put students into groups.
  3. One student from each group comes to the front and chooses an envelope (each group can have only ONE envelope at a time). As a group they rearrange the words so they form the correct sentence. Students write the sentence on their handout, return word pieces to the envelope and return to the designated envelope area to trade in for an unsolved envelope.
  4. Check their answers regularly to make sure they are on the right track.

VARIATIONS:

  • To shorten the activity, have them write only in English.

TIPS/CAUTIONS:

  • Since all sentences fit on one page, it is easy to bring a backup page to replace lost pieces, which is basically inevitable.
  • If you have the ability to print the word cards on heavy paper it helps, but is not necessary.
