BRIEF OUTLINE:   Students guess each other's chosen person by asking "does" questions.   

 

MATERIALS NEEDED:

 

DETAILED EXPLANATION:

  1. Draw pictures on the board: beard, hat, glasses etc. Ask the students what the pictures are and teach/review the vocabulary.
  2. Get a brave student to stand up. Then, ask the class a "does" question about the standing student: "Does he have black hair?" Students will probably answer simply, "Yes." so teach the full-sentence way of answering: "Yes, he does." Get the class to repeat the answer a couple times. Using the same student, ask the class a question you know they will say "No" to: "Does he have a beard?" Have class try to answer the question using a full-sentence format: "No, he does not."
    • Then, model the game:
    • ALT/JTE play Janken.
    • Winner chooses a famous person.
    • Loser keeps asking "does" questions until they correctly guess the person.
      3. Swap roles and repeat.
      4. Explain the grammar point "Are THEY a girl?" Mainly, explain that "they" is used when we don't know the gender.
      5. Finally, students start the game.

       

          VARIATIONS:

          • There is no "winning" aspect really since you can guess correctly or incorrectly as many times as possible without any outcome, so for classes that are harder to motivate, you might want to create some kind of point system. You might like to give each student five coins/cards/tokens and if they guess incorrectly they have to give one to their partner.

           

          TEACHING SUGGESTIONS:

          • he above Detailed Explanation is designed to fill the whole lesson time. In previous class before doing this activity, students had a very brief outline of asking "does" questions.
          • This activity fits in nicely with Total English grade one's Lesson 3B, but can also be used by any other textbook that is practicing "does" questions.
          • One of the characters on the worksheet is a teacher from my school, so you might want to change it to a funny picture of one of your teachers.
