Brief Outline: Students play a true/false betting game by guessing the ALT's sentences, much like Englipedia's Mastermind game. This is a good review activity to practice reading infinitive sentences and Subordinate Conjunctions (because).

Materials Needed:

  • WantToPachinko worksheet: One per student and an answer key for teachers.

Detailed Explanation:

  1. After giving each student a worksheet, go over each sentence with the reasons to ensure understanding.
  2. Spend about 3-5 minutes on each sentence. Each group will decide on one reason for each sentence and make a bet.
  3. Teachers will then ask students what reason they choose and how much they bet. For higher level class, have students read the reason aloud and say how much they bet in English.
  4. Teachers will tell students which reason is the correct answer. The groups that guess correctly win their bet and the group that guess incorrectly lose their bet. Then, move on to the next sentence.
  5. The group with the most money wins.

Variations:

  • If the sentences in this activity were changed to "I want to ~ TO ~" instead of "BECAUSE", then it could be used for the Infinitive Verb (suru tame ni).

  • The writing section of the worksheet is optional but recommended.

Teaching Suggestions:

  • Check Englipedia's Pachinko for reference.
