OUTLINE: Student's guess what the teacher is, then make their own hints and have their partners guess who they are.





  1. Give them some examples, and explain the rules (make sure your JTE understands the rules). Explaining the rules works best if you make it a guessing game where the students guess the teacher's character, and simply explain the rules as you go.
  2. It basically goes as follows: The person who is being guessed (We'll call this person A) chooses something and makes five hints for that thing. Then A gives a hint to start. The second person (B) should ask a yes or no question, if the answer to their question is "Yes," B can ask another question without using a hint. If the answer is "No," then A will give B another hint but cut down the number of points B gets A will also get points as B loses them (if B only uses 1 hint, B gets 4 points. If B only uses 2 hints, B gets 3 points and A gets 1 point. If B uses 3 hints, B gets 2 points and A gets 2 points. If B uses 4 hints, B gets 1 point and A gets 3 points. If B uses 5 hints, B gets no points and A gets 4 points). The point system is explained in Japanese on their worksheets.
  3. Once students understand the game, move on to the writing portion with the worksheets.
  4.  Review words in the Tool Box
  5.  Have students write 5 hunts and what they are.
  6. Let them start guessing with their partner. First one side then the other. Ideally try to get them to do at least 4 rounds.
  7. At the end of the class see who got the most points



  • It sounds a bit complicated, but the kids caught on really quick when I explained it just by starting the game where they guessed who I was first. This is what I did in my class:
    I actually made it a game with teams, but didn't bother splitting them up or explaining two much I just pointed and said Team 1, team 2, team 3. (There are six rows in my class and I just made three teams out of the six rows.)
    Then I started.
    Eg. "I am long. What am I?"
    (We checked understanding for long, and of course one of the kids immediately tried to guess the answer rather than using a narrowing it down question.
    Eg. "Are you a pencil?"
    So, I answered "No," and then explained that a yes answer means the team that asked the question can ask another question, but if I give a "No" answer then I will give them another hint that everyone can guess at but a point is lost. (I showed them on the board that 1 hint was 4 points for them, 2 hints was 3 points for them and 1 point for me (YAY fist-pump)
    The teacher gave an example of a yes or no answer at that point.
    Eg. "Are you an animal?"


  • I gave them a very strict time limit to choose their object either from the suggestion box, or something else, but I literally counted down from 30 seconds (If you don't give them a time-limit they'll take forever trying to think of something.)
    I then gave them a time limit for writing their hints, I was generous with examples on the board. They should be able to do it in about 5 minutes, they're not really hard hints, but talk with your JTE and decide how long to give them.
