OUTLINEUsing the past tense passive voice to guess the 'birth' dates of various things and people.

  1. Review the grammar with the students by showing them some pictures and having them guess the answers to "In what year was ___ born?" or "In what year was ___ invented?". Be sure to discuss the meanings of 'to be born' and 'to be invented'. Be sure to write out the answer on the board using the passive voice. Tell the students that writing the complete sentence is their goal. "The bicycle was invented in ____." "Nikola Tesla was born in ____."
  2. Hand out the answer sheets.
  3. Show the students a flash card and ask 'who' or 'what' is this. Explain a bit and stick the flashcard on the board with the name clearly written underneath. This way the students don't have to guess the spelling of the name.
  4. Check answers.

  • You can help control the time by how you check the answers. Build it up, discuss it or have students read their answers out loud.

  • I would throw caution to using items that the students may not know. In my example I use Nikola Tesla and none of the students have ever known who he is. Therefore, its my example.

  • The teaching time is listed as 10-50 min. This activity has the potential to be used as a whole lesson, or if necessary, could be done as a short review activity.
