BRIEF OUTLINE: This is a listening activity where students watch 5 Christmas Cartoons and listen to fill in the blanks on their worksheet.

MATERIALS NEEDED:

  • X-masCartoonListeningChallengeattachment
  • X-masCartoons(To be downloaded from a dropbox. This is a huge 283mb file, so prepare for this. Downloading from a school computer will take 2 hours on average.
  • TV, laptop, and a media player which handles subtitle files to play the videos.

DETAILED EXPLANATION:

  1. This is a very easy class to run and a lot of fun for the students. The videos being watched are from Simpsons Christmas, Frosty the Snowman, Mickey's Christmas Carol, Charlie Brown Christmas, and Spongebob Christmas.
  2. Hand out the worksheets and play each video twice so they have a chance to hear any that they missed. If a class has a problem hearing a particular word, I will replay that section multiple times until they get it.
  3. This activity takes about 30-35 minutes to run depending on the class, so if you need to fill a whole period it might be worth explaining some of the Christmas traditions in each video that they might not be familiar with (like Santa giving coal to bad children).
  4. The order I play the videos is the same order as on the worksheet. You will need a laptop running VLC or some other media player that can handle subtitle files. Many of the cartoons have both the modified subtitle file as well as the full subtitles in case you want to change it.
  5. You can also make 3-4 teams in the class. After the listening activity portion is complete ask for the answers and give a point to the team that answers first.
