BRIEF OUTLINE: Students learn a brief history of Thanksgiving (American) and Thanksgiving culture.  They discuss and write about what they are thankful for.

MATERIALS NEEDED:

  • Thanksgiving History and Food worksheet - .DOC / PDF
  • Big pictures of Thanksgiving food (optional)

DETAILED EXPLANATION:

  1. Briefly introduce Thanksgiving.  What do the students know already?
  2. Hand out the worksheet and have the students read through it.  This can be done individually, out loud as a group, in rotation, etc.  Be sure to review the vocabulary well.
  3. When finished reading, introduce some of your favorite Thanksgiving foods.  Does Japan eat these kinds of foods?
  4. Have the students try to match the pictures of food with their description.
  5. Discuss Thanksgiving's thankfulness and what you are thankful for.
  6. Have the students write one or two sentences about what they are thankful for.  This can be individual or as a group.
  7. Have the students share their sentences with the class.

VARIATIONS:

  • Have the students talk about foods that they would want at their Thanksgiving dinner.

TEACHING SUGGESTIONS:

  • This was designed for a multiple level adult class, but can be used for Senior High or Junior High students.
