BRIEF OUTLINE: This is the third phonics lesson in the BubbleBoy Phonics 2009 curriculum. This is an important lesson for the students because this is where the students learn voiceless sounds, which there are none in the Japanese language.




  1. The first part of worksheet is review, where the students play 4 quick games of bingo: 2 Start Sounds (upper/lowercase) and 2 Finish Sounds (upper/lowercase).
  2. Then, start the worksheet.
  3. Part 1: You say a 'No Sound' and the students circle the correct letter.

    Part 2: The students circle all the No Sound letters WITHOUT looking at the first page. 

    Part 3: The students complete the dot-to-dot by you saying various sounds. The answers are on page 3 of the worksheet. (NOTE: There are uppercase & lowercase letters. Before each sound, you'll need to tell the students "big/small XXX." Also, there are numbers included in this dot-to-dot.



  • You'll need to add the letter Q to the worksheet. I forgot to add it and am too lazy to redo the worksheet. ;)
  • For teachers just starting out teaching phonics, I highly recommend syncing up with your JTE and have a long discussion about what your phonics lesson is going to include. In my experience, I have gone down the phonics path alone, AND I have gone down the path with a JTE. I have found that even with my mad Japanese skillz, a JTE can express the point of the lesson much more thoroughly than I could. However, this can only be done if both you are on the same page going into class. Communcation is of the utmost importance you and the JTE because this style of teaching is not commonly seen in the average Japanese classroom.
