BRIEF OUTLINE: This is the fourth phonics lesson in the BubbleBoy Phonics 2009 curriculum. Guru-Guru is Japanese and it is that viberation sound in the throat that signals a sound is voiced vs. voiceless.

  1. I introduce the Guru-Guru sounds: B, D, G, J, L, M, N, R, V, W, Y, Z. If you have been teaching these phonics lessons in order, the students should know all the sounds except for the G and W. The G-sound I teach as the "gu-gu-gu G." Thanks to a woman on Japanese TV, Harumi, she made her trademark as always saying, "gu-gu-gu." The W-sound I teach as the びくり W, Japanese for 'surprise' or Wow.
  2. Hand out the worksheet:
    • PART 1: You say a 'No Sound' and the students circle the correct letter
    • PART 2: Is a review maze for Finish Sounds. Students work their way through the maze following the Finish Sounds
    • PART 3: Is a mind-boggling maze for Guru-Guru Sounds. Students follow make their way through the maze following the Guru-Guru Sounds. (NOTE: Have the students do this maze WITHOUT looking at the first page.)
    • PART 4: This is a set of five small bingos that practices all of the phonics lessons up to this point. I only choose 3 sounds for each Bingo. The last Bingo, ALL OK! Bingo, the students can choose any of the sounds they have learned up to this point. Because there are so many sounds to choose from, I choose 6 sounds for this particular bingo.
