BRIEF OUTLINE: Students have to think of English words, phrases and sentences in order to help other students understand the mystery word.

MATERIALS NEEDED:

DETAILED EXPLANATION:

  1. After passing out the worksheets, students make groups of four. Two students should have Worksheet A, while the other two students have Worksheet B.
  2. Then, students take turns playing the pyramid game. One team has a 'mystery' word, for example, "cake." 'cake' would look like this on the game card:
    • Coffee
    • Apple
    • Korea
    • Elephant. (one MYSTERY word and four hint words...)
  3. The team with the mystery word has to help the other team guess the word.
  4. Students use the hint words to help the other team. For example, the first hint word in the example above is "Coffee." Students can say: I'm sleepy, Boss, Georgia, Black, My dad drinks this often, etc.
  5. The guessing student will most like say, "Ah! Coffee!" They then write the first letter of the hint word in the word blank on their worksheet.
  6. The game is over when the students can guess the MYSTERY word.

VARIATIONS:

  • You can have the game in groups of four, where three students have a pyramid word card, and the other student is the guesser.
  • If you're creative, you can think of a lot of other variations to suit your needs. ;)

TIPS/CAUTIONS:
  • This is best for 3rd year students, or 2nd year students with good abilities.
