BRIEF OUTLINE: Choose a sentence from the textbook. Students guess letters and try to guess the sentence. It's more fun than it sounds.

 

MATERIALS NEEDED:

  • Blackboard, chalk and textbook

 

DETAILED EXPLANATION:

  1. Divide the class into three teams (in my class, two rows of students make one team). Write a number or name on the board to represent each team.
  2. Open your textbook and choose a secret sentence. On the board, draw a line to represent each letter of every word in the sentence. Write any punctuation normally. example: _ _ _'_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _! (Don't touch me!)
  3. Ask the first student in the first team to guess a letter.
  4. If the letter is not used in the sentence, write the letter below the sentence so students know that letter has been guessed, and move on to the next team.
  5. If the letter is used in the sentence, write all appearances of the letter. (in the above example, if a student guessed 't', I would write 2 't's.) Now say "CHANCE!" This means that anyone in the team can try to guess the sentence in its entirety. Raise your hand to start a 5-second timer, lowering one finger every second. If the team does not guess correctly in 5 seconds, say "PASS!" and move on to the next team. Do not write in any words they may have guessed, even if they were correct. Only fill in the entire sentence when it has been completely guessed correctly.
  6. When a team answers correctly, write the sentence and give the team a point.

 

VARIATIONS:

  • After playing a few times, choose an outgoing student take your role as game-master.
  • You could have the winning team (or losing teams) of each round repeat the sentence,

 

TEACHING SUGGESTIONS:

  • The very first time you introduce this game to your class, write the entire alphabet on the board below the sentence. This makes it very clear to students what they should guess and gives you a visual reference if there is confusion. Cross out a letter after it is used.
  • Great review game. Use it to get everyone thinking in English at the beginning of class, or as a fun (yet controlled) way to end a class.

 

TIPS/CAUTIONS:

  • Make sure you say "CHANCE!" and start a 5-second timer, even if only one letter has been guessed correctly. Students find it ridiculous and funny, and utterly amazing if someone guesses the sentence!
  • When it is a team's turn to guess, don't let the team start shouting out letters. Start with the first student in the row to guess. On the team's next turn to guess a letter, the second student guesses, and so on. But when a correct letter has been guessed, let the whole team try to guess the sentence.
  • I suggest making three teams (in my case, about 10-12 students per team, 2 rows per team). If you make each row one team, the game moves too slowly for each individual team, and some teams won't even get a chance to guess during the round.
